What  Is FCS?

Family and Consumer Sciences, previously known as home economics, is a discipline comprised of five different subjects including interiors & housing, child development & parenting, consumerism & home economic decisions, fashion design & clothing, and foods & nutrition. Currently Family Consumer Sciences is taught in public schools across the United States typically at the middle and high school levels.

Child Development and Parenting

Credit : 1

Course Length : Full Year

Description:Students will focus on analyzing parenting roles and responsibilities, ensuring a healthy start for mother and child, evaluating support systems that provide
services for parents, and evaluating parenting practices that maximize human growth and development. Critical thinking, practical problem solving using case
studies, and entrepreneurship opportunities within the area of parenting responsibilities and child development are emphasized.

Individual Development

Credit : 1

Course Length : Full Year

Description:Individual Development focuses on encouraging personal potential of self and others; enhancing positive views of self and others; managing stressful situations;
formulating a plan to achieve career goals; forming healthy, caring relationships with family members and peers; and managing conflict. Critical thinking and
practical problem solving are emphasized throughout the curriculum, including short units in nutrition and food preparation skills, construction of a simple sewing
project, and money management.

Course Length : Full Year

Description: Students will explore units of study in food science and technology; dietetics and nutrition services; diverse cultures; cuisines and service styles; current
trends; food and beverage production and preparation; and food safety and sanitation. Food-related careers will also be examined.
